NEJ Stevenson commissioned for Belgravia Refurbishment Project

Bespoke furniture maker NEJ Stevenson Ltd, were instructed by project Architects Heckmann Design Ltd, to manufacture the complete furniture package for the refurbishment of a client’s property in Belgravia London, working alongside the client’s Interior Designer, Moscow based Geometry Design and specialist building contractors, Seacon Ltd based in London.

Heckmann Design needed a true partner for this commission. A bespoke furniture maker that could deliver the high-quality finish required, but also able to faithfully execute the interior designer’s concept. Anna Saroukhanova, Director at Heckmann Design commented: “One of the challenges we faced was that the client and Interior Designer, Geometry Design, were based abroad and the interiors scheme had already been developed. Appointing the right bespoke furniture joinery company that could deliver the Interior Designer’s vision was critical and who were willing to develop the technical details with us”. NEJ Stevenson’s reputation for exceptional joinery and creative solutions made them the ideal company to work with on this project.

At first glance the design appears to be quite uncomplicated and therefore suggests simple to achieve, but the long-detailed runs of panelling and concealed doors were a significant challenge to achieve the seamless and consistent finish. Understanding veneers and the importance of orientation along with the subtle adaptation of the three-part finish, resulted in a project of seemingly effortless finesse. Throughout the apartment the finishes palate subtly changes from clear lacquered oak through bleached and tinted to stained and painted, giving contrasting but complementary tones to the individual rooms. Similarly, the use of texture provides further interest and variation throughout from the sandblasted and painted softwood in the study to the sculptural veneered wings in the bedroom and the chip carved wall projections in the main hallway.

David Drew, Projects Director at NEJ Stevenson Ltd commented: “This was an exciting and challenging project. However, it allowed us to bring to life the furniture as designed by Geometry Design and develop techniques to enable the seamless flow from one area to another with no evidence of jointing and maintaining the construction flow.”

Neil Stevenson, Owner and Managing Director commented: “We are honoured to have been awarded the contract to complete the joinery for this project and working alongside esteemed companies: London based specialist building contractors, Seacon Ltd; Moscow based Interior Designer, Geometry Design and Heckmann Design, London based, Project Architects who have also managed this project”.
